Chapter Eleven
As I put my hand on the bookshopâs doorknob, a light filled the edge of my vision. I turned around again to see the cowboy I thought Iâd seen earlier. Glowing. It was more than disconcerting, but I wasnât afraid as he stood on the edge of the curb and looked at me.
âMay I help you?â I asked, warily but firmly.
âYou see me?â he asked.
âI do, though youâre ⦠Goodness!â I sighed and put my hands on my hips. âAre you a ghost?â
âI am!â he said with a smile.
I didnât feel quite as happy as he did about it. âWhy am I seeing you? Am I ⦠a ghost too?â But I didnât think I was. It sure seemed that all the other people Iâd been talking to thought I was a live person.
âI donât think so,â he said. âBut somethingâs not right with you.â
âYes, well, that is true.â
âI donât know what it is, but Iâm drawn to you. I wish I understood why.â
âOh, me too, but I suspect itâs,â I looked around, but with his glow I could tell there wasnât anyone else in the vicinity. Nevertheless, I lowered my voice, âbecause Iâve traveled through time. Iâve from, well, the future.â
He started at me a long moment. He looked exactly like I would expect a cowboy from the Wild West to look: rugged, worn around the edges, handsome. âI think that could be it.â
I nodded. âI canât imagine what else it might be. Who are you?â
âNameâs Jerome Cowbender. I was shot dead here a long time ago.â
âBut you canât leave, go on to, to whatever or wherever is next?â I crossed my arms in front of myself, now completely fascinated by this new and even crazier (actually, I donât know which was crazier, time travel or talking to a ghost) eventuality.
âNot exactly. I get to be there, too, but sometimes Iâm here. Thereâs something about Broken Rope. It draws us back.â
âUs?â
âYes maâam. Thereâre more ghosts than me, more whoâve been dealt their fates in Broken Rope. But Iâm not sure they matter to you, or theyâd probably be here with us tonight.â
âWhy do you matter?â
âIâm not sure yet, but it will come to me. It always does.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, Iâm here to fix something. I usually work through a friend whoâs alive, like you. But for some reason, you can see me. And I figure we need to try to understand that reason.â
âI agree. Maybe youâre here to help me get home?â I hoped.
And then, as suddenly as heâd appeared, he was gone. I wasnât sure if I heard a pop or just imagined one, but darkness filled the street once again. I had to blink a few times to see anything.
Had I imagined him?
I really didnât think so, but I could only shrug and hope that this adventure I was on wasnât going to continue simply to get weirder before it started making sense.
âHello?â I said to the air.
No one responded. Farrellâs car was long out of sight.
